About that Will Eisner Guy (BlastOffComics.com)

by Amy Ratcliffe

November 30, 2012

Confession time: until this month I’d never read a Will Eisner comic.

I know he’s incredibly influential in the medium. I understand that the Eisner Awards are a huge deal, and they wouldn’t be named after him if he wasn’t the same. Reading The Spirit has been on my list of things to read for a while but so is a lot of other stuff and I haven’t got around to it (I know). I was introduced to his work through A Contract with God instead.

Apparently it’s commonly said that this was the first comic to call itself a graphic novel; it was published in 1978. From Eisner’s keynote address at the 2002 Will Eisner Symposium:

“That began what is known as the graphic novel today. Those of you who’ve heard me speak before know this now famous story about how it was called a “graphic novel.” I completed the book, A Contract With God, and I called the president of Bantam Books in New York, who I knew had seen my work with The Spirit. Now, this was a very busy guy who didn’t have much time to speak to you.

So I called him and said, “There’s something I want to show you, something I think is very interesting.”

He said, “Yeah, well, what is it?”

A little man in my head popped up and said, “For Christ’s sake stupid, don’t tell him it’s a comic. He’ll hang up on you.” So, I said, “It’s a graphic novel.”

He said, “Wow! That sounds interesting. Come on up.”

Shelly Dankert, The Living Will Eisner Character (Storming The Ivory Tower)

By Sam Keeper

I love Gawker, have I mentioned that? I mean, actually I just love their name. It’s such an expressive, self aware name, openly acknowledging the voyeuristic glee that its content evokes.

I bring it up because I’m relatively sure that it was Gawker that contributed the most to the popularity of this video.

This video got really popular, really quickly after the election. It’s one of a number of images, articles, and videos that did so, of course, all following the general theme of “Willard ‘Mittens’ Romney lost the election, and therefore the American experiment is effectively over.” But something about this didn’t quite jive with the overblown, eschatological pronouncements of the others, the wailing and gnashing of teeth, the rending of vestments and declarations that America Itself Has Died. Hell, there’s points (as when she’s railing against Birther stupidity, for example) where she sounds downright reasonable, despite her obvious delusions of grandeur.

What propelled this particular video to stardom?

Well, if I had to hazard a guess, I would say that people are fascinated by this video for the same reason they read Will Eisner comics.

Bear with me here.

Here’s How Your Donation Will Be Used
Expert Legal Defense: When a First Amendment emergency becomes a criminal case, CBLDF springs to action. Thanks to our efforts, earlier this year Canadian authorities dropped all criminal charges in the case of Ryan Matheson, an American citizen who was wrongfully accused at the U.S. / Canadian border of importing child pornography on his laptop, when in fact, what he had on his computer was humor and fantasy manga. CBLDF provided substantive support in the form of legal resources and expert witnesses. We also contributed $30,000 to Ryan’s legal fees, and we are currently working to pay off the remaining $34,000 in legal defense costs.  Ryan appeared at NYCC to tell his story.  You can read his words or listen to a recording of the panel to learn how CBLDF members made a difference in his life here.

Preventative Legal Action: The CBLDF is most successful when you don’t hear about our work.  That’s because our powerful legal team is working to defuse First Amendment emergencies at the first sign of trouble.  For instance, this summer, we were successful in ending an investigation involving a comics reader in Idaho who was turned into police by an intimate partner.  That partner maliciously alleged that the comics this reader owned were child pornography and obscene.  They weren’t. Our lawyers asserted that truth and made the case go away before it went to court. CBLDF’s expert legal team is available at a moment’s notice to respond to First Amendment emergencies like these thanks to the monetary support of our members.

Proactive Library Support: Comics are an important, and often misunderstood facet of 21st Century libraries, making them the target offrequent challenges. CBLDF stands up for the freedom to read when these challenges happen.  Most recently, we sent a letter of support to Bill Ptacek, a Seattle area library director commending the library for standing up for the intellectual freedom of its patrons in the face of an attack in the media for offering manga in the library’s adult collection.  In September we spoke out against the ban of the graphic novelSideScrollers in Connecticut, and published dozens of resources as part of our sponsorship of Banned Books Week.  Efforts to ban specific comics titles keep happening and constant vigilance is necessary to keep them accessible to the public. CBLDF members make it possible for us to do that work.

Commitment to Education: The modern era is bringing more readers to comics from more places than ever, but it’s also bringing new threats.  That’s why CBLDF is committed to providing a growing education program that elevates awareness of the rights that the people who read, circulate, and make comics are guaranteed by the First Amendment, and how those rights are endangered.  We do this by delivering presentations to lawyers, librarians, students and readers all over the United States.  We also maintain a website that strives to be the internet’s best resource for information about comics censorship.  CBLDF.org maintains a daily news blog and a rich and growing resources section, with case studies on Banned Comics, Case Files that include a growing library of original court documents, rich historical sections on Comics Censorship History, the Comics Code, and manga censorship, and much more.

What to watch tonight? Will Eisner’s and Frank Miller’s “The Spirit”–Nov. 15

621_356_the_spirit

“The Spirit” airs tonight at 8/7c and again at 10:15/9:15 p.m. CT

Posted November 15th, 2012, 8:11 AM by Melissa Locker

Will Eisner’s dazzlingly dark graphic novel “The Spirit” comes to life in a stunning stylized manner. Directed by Eisner’s comics world colleague, Frank Miller, “The Spirit jumps off the screen to engage the viewer. It’s not a surprise, though, as Miller uses the same green-screen method that brought “Sin City” to life. Miller earned his directorial bona fides when Robert Rodriguez brought him on to co-direct “Sin City,” which was based on Miller’s graphic novel. Miller put his “Sin City” experiences to good use in “The Spirit” bring the characters to life on the silver screen while remaining true to their comics roots. In “The Spirit” he creates a stark and highly stylized film noir world in the vein of “Batman Begins” or “Dark Knight Rises.”

The film stars Gabriel Macht as a rookie cop who is brutally killed, but because this is a comic he is mysteriously brought back to life. He then assumes the guise of The Spirit — a masked crime fighter who prowls the shadows of Central City on a supernatural mission to keep the urban landscape safe. As with most superheroes, The Spirit has an arch nemesis, The Octopus, who is played by Samuel L. Jackson. The Octopus is determined to live forever even if it means wiping out the entire population of Central City, so The Spirit has no choice but to stop the diabolical villain from achieving his cold-blooded plan. But even with his unique powers, the brave masked crusader faces deadly challenges from the treacherous beauties that inhabit Central City, including the sweet girl next door Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson), spitfire secretary Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson), wraithlike siren Lorelei (Jaime King), seductive policewoman Morgenstern (Stana Katic), and thee black widow Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega) who all set out to seduce The Spirit. Then there’s the Angel of Death who’s determined to claim the only man who ever somehow escaped her grasp. Even when he’s in the arms of his true love, Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), our hero isn’t safe.

Watch the trailer and be sure to tune in tonight at 8/7c for “The Spirit”:
