Will Eisner fans are getting louder in how much they hate Frank Miller’s Will Eisner’s The Spirit. Here are a few more samples of what you’ll find by joining Yahoo! Groups’ “Will Eisner Discussion Group”:

I will see it but I am not liking the stuff I’ve seen so far… too Sin City and less Spirit.

After reading the Eisner/Miller book I would have thought Miller would have really done it right. Of course, we haven’t seen it but what we’ve seen hasn’t thrilled very many Spirit fans.

Darwyn Cooke should have directed it. His take was fine in my book.

I’d take a Pixar version done in an Eisner type style in a minute.

My favorite thing about the 1987 pilot for THE SPIRIT as a tv series was the look of the beautiful Eisner drawings in the opening titles sequence.

One thing I’d do if I was putting together a movie of THE SPIRIT would be reminiscent of the WONDER WOMAN tv series with Lynda Carter–I’d have a montage of animated shots based on Eisner splash pages and each one would dissolve into a live action shot of the same scene.

I don’t know much about the fellow who is playing Denny in the new movie, but, that awful BATMAN film aside, George Cloobey could play THE SPIRIT well. He has the looks and the charm, THE SPIRIT doesn’t have to be a huge muscular chap, and Clooney was good as Bruce Wayne, it wasn’t his fault that the BATMAN movie he was in was terrible.

From what I understand, Miller has S-canned Ebony entirely. I find that to be a poor decision. Although the racial stereotyping is tough to take by today’s standards, Ebony was, in many ways, the heart of the Spirit strip — something I think Fieffer and Eisner realized after trying to replace him for a time with other less offensive kids.
