In the basement studio of his Waterloo home, cartoonist Scott Chantler works among giants.
A Batman storyboard is beside his desk; an Orson Welles Citizen Kane poster is on the wall. And a 1940s illustration from The Spirit, a newspaper comic book series by the late U.S.
comics legend Will Eisner, who is Chantler’s “absolute role model,” is a gaze away from his drafting table.
“I discovered Eisner’s work at 18,” Chantler says. “His work is all about storytelling. Everything is rooted in story . . . . It’s not just an excuse to draw giant robots.”
